Lyka Ugarte regrets not being successful at taking her own life
by Elyas Isabelo Salanga
FEB 8, 2010
Yoraidyl Stone, better known by her screen name Lyka Ugarte, has attempted to take her own life again by slashing her wrists with broken glass.
The 43-year-old former sexy star who gained popularity in the 1980s had been in the news before for her failed attempts to take her own life. She tried it again just as the new year was beginning, and failed.
"After ng huling interview niyo sa akin, which was sometime in October, this is the fifth attempt," revealed Lyka to Showbiz Central yesterday, February 7.
"It really, really, deeply hurts me that after my previous interview, I got a lot of very negative comments," lamented Lyka. "[They're] saying that I should see a psychiatrist and that I am mentally imbalanced. I have been seeing a psychiatrist for the past three and a half years. I have already been diagnosed as bipolar II, and I see my doctor regularly."
Bipolar II disorder, according to www.webmd.com, is a form of mental illness with moods cycling between high and low over time. Most people affected by this disorder suffer from episodes of depression and at times experience symptoms such as suddenly switching from one idea to the next, rapid and loud speech, an increased energy with hyperactivity, and a decreased need for sleep.
The actress emotionally related her experience and expressed regret at not being able to end her life.
"Sa kuwarto ko, I just broke a glass and just closed my eyes and I just gave one strong slash on the left and one strong slash on the right," said Lyka between tears. "If someone didn't kick the door, patay na sana ako. Sayang, wala na sana ako."
DESTROYED RELATIONSHIP BEHIND IT. The reason behind her desire to die is rooted in a failed relationship.
"My partner has been my partner since October 2007," related Lyka.
What made the experience worse was her story about getting sexually harassed. "Pinakamasakit sa akin kasi kasama ko siya, so... kasamahan niya sa trabaho ang gumawa," she cried. "Ni hindi niya ako ipinagtanggol."
Lyka's friends and even her children have tried their best to make her change her mind.
Defiantly, she said, "I don't really care kung ano itawag niyo sa akin. This is my life and I'm tired of it."

Actress Lyka Ugarte attempts suicide for the fourth time
by Rose Garcia
OCT 19, 2009
"...ang pumapasok sa isip ko is they are better off without me. Because I made a lot of mistakes and I think I'm not an ideal mom, which my children would always deny. They always say that 'you're such a cool and good mom.' But during the moments of depression, because I am certified clinically depressed, that's how I think about it, you know? But I do think of them, I always do," says Lyka Ugarte when asked if she thinks about her children every time she tries to kill her
So, it gets harder and harder for her."
Naikuwento nga nito na nagte-text sa kanya si Lyka "to pray for her na sana she would not wake up anymore because of the burden she has on her shoulders."
Siguro kapag may ibang taong pumasok, or siguro I'll ask help from other people, it might help more," aniya.
"Marami kasing nangyayari like, yun nga, yung bagyo," banggit ni Kimberly. "Nagbebenta nga kami ng gamit and as you can see, wala na kaming gamit.
"We try to understand naman. You reach a point na ayaw mo na rin. Parang ganun.
"Pero ang pumapasok sa isip ko is they are better off without me. Because I made a lot of mistakes and I think I'm not an ideal mom, which my children would always deny. They always say that 'you're such a cool and good mom.' But during the moments of depression, because I am certified clinically depressed, that's how I think about it, you know? But I do think of them, I always do."
Every time something like this happens in the home, ano ang sinasabi ng mga anak niya sa kanya? How do they try to make her feel better?
"Actually, every time I do it, they don't know. You do not try to kill yourself in front of people naman, di ba?" medyo natatawang sabi ni Lyka. "So, I try doing it normally when they are asleep. But after it happens, we don't really talk about it. It's like a silent understanding. But every time it happens, I know that my children really go out of their way to make me happy, do kalokohans, so I could laugh, especially Kimberly."
Si Kimberly ang tumatayong emotional support ngayon ni Lyka at siya ring nag-send ng text messages to help her out. How does she feel na pati si Kimberly ay tila naggi-give up na rin?
"Of course, sad," naiiyak na sagot ni Lyka. "You know, she's too young to be handling this. Unfortunately, I'm a single mom. I wish that during this moments, I could at least send them to their fathers first para huwag nilang makita ang nangyayari.
"And we call each other kasi 'Spongebob'. When I have my problems, she's my sponge. And when she has problems also, I'm her sponge naman. I have a very, very good relationship with Kimberly. She's tame and ako naman, I'm a typical Leo. We compliment each other, she's a very good listener. And she just says, 'Mom, it's gonna be okay. I've seen you bounce back. You're just having a hard time right now.'"
Tanong ni Raymond, yung problem niya with her mom and her other relationships, sa tingin ba niya ay reason na yun para magtangka siyang magpakamatay?
"Okay... Actually, all my life, I've been fighting. Since I was 15 years old, I've been taking care of the family already. At the age of 20, I was a single mom. So, from 15 years old up to the age of 40, it's all fight, fight, fight, fight... Para akong lalake, di ba, if you agree. Most men would compartmentalize, di ba? And that's what I've been doing, compartmentalizing.
"And then something happened nung 2007. I had a relationship with somebody for four years whom I thought was gonna be a relationship that will last until I was old and then, I found out na dalawa kami. Actually, that's where it started and I have not recovered from that. And then, nadadagdagan siya nang nadadagdagan. Ngayon, wala na akong trabaho. Tinanggal ako sa trabaho nang very unjustly. I was terminated without any good reason last October.
"And then Christmas came, I did not have any money at all. So, talagang medyo malungkot yung Pasko namin, which never happened. Then, No. 3, I broke up with another relationship that affected me a lot also. Kasi, parang ang feeling ko, why of all the times now when I was really down that you decided to leave me."
Parang nagpatong-patong?
"Yes," sagot ni Lyka. "Because of my depression, I can be destructive sometimes. There was an incident that I was really destructive and then I lost two of my best friends, and I tried to ask forgiveness and they never gave it.
"And the most recent bad thing that really made me very, very depressed, yun ang naging ano talaga... I was sexually harassed by a Pagcor [Phil. Amusement and Gaming Corp.] employee. But, in fairness naman to Mr. [Efraim] Genuino, because I sent a complaint letter, they're handling the investigation in an expedient manner. The communication is very open and they are taking care of it. I'm happy, you know, that the Pagcor management is very good.
"I have nothing against Pagcor," patuloy ni Lyka. "Kung ano yung ginawa ng empleyado has nothing to do with Pagcor. It's just that he happens to work there, so I had to go through their management of what he did. With Pagcor, I don't have any problems at all."
Sa lahat ng nangyari sa kanya, ina-assure ba ni Lyka ang mga anak niya na she'll never do this again?
"Okay, kasi when we talk about four times, the first two were not... it did not have big impact, 'no? So, the first two is not considered. It was really the third, kasi yun yung na-ICU ako and Kimberly had to face 15 doctors and she had to hear the words, 'We're trying to do our very best to save her, she might not make it.'
"After that incident, yes, I did. But then, I did it again. So now, how can I give the assurance? I've lost their trust. So I don't wanna give any assurance anymore. I can only I will try my very best not to do it.. That's all I can say."
What have you learned and what are your plans for the future?
"What I have learned? It's very painful. When you're down, ang konti ng kaibigan mo. Kapag up ka, ang dami-dami, you know. I am very grateful to those who responded to Kimberly's texts and I was so amazed that the ones who responded were the ones I did not expect who's gonna respond. I expected those people who I was really close for a long time, but they were the ones who did not respond.
"And learning... I don't know. I mean kasi, I thought I learned something the third time, but I did it again, e. So, I'm not learning, I guess. The depression is just too much that I could say I'm not learning."
Her message to Kimberly?
"Kim, and I guess to all my children, not just Kimberly... I'm sorry. I'm sorry again. I know how bad you feel and I know that you feel you have failed me because I did it again. That's why you started seeking out help from other people because you think that you're not capable, but that's not true.
"You have been my strength all this time. I mean, all of you, four kids, you have been my strength. I love you guys very, very much. It's hard to believe that from somebody who tried to kill herself four times, it's a very selfish attitude. But please, believe me when I say that I love you with all my heart and soul," saad ni Lyka.
Advice ni Raymond na siguro raw seeking professional help will help her.
"I've been seeking professional help for three years. How come it's not doing anything?" natatawang sabi naman ni Lyka.

The last news about Lyka Ugarte was about her suicide attempts. Now she's back to tell the good news herself that she's moving on and ready to face the world and cameras again.
Sa pakikipag-usap niya sa PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kamakailan, maraming ibinahagi ang half-Pinay, half-British sexy actress, whose real name is Yoraidyl (an anagram of her parents' name: Lydia and Roy) Stone.
After she won first runner-up at the Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant when she was 17, she represented the Philippines in the 1984 Most Beautiful Girl international search in Ohio, USA.
Director Danny Zialcita took notice of her and immediately cast her as the "naïve sexy young lass" in the hit comedy May Lamok sa Loob ng Kulambo.
More projects came after she made her debut on the silver screen. She was then paired with young action superstars Rudy Fernandez and Bong Revilla.
Very promising ang career ni Lyka that time until she fell in love and in her own words, "nagpaka-istupida sa ngalan ng pag-ibig."
She left movies in the early ‘90s, went to the States for a while, at sinubukang mamuhay dun with her kids. When she returned, she worked as cinema operations manager of all SM theaters in 2000.
As a divorcee, she tried to raise her four children decently.
For three years, nagsama sila as "partners."
"I've given up everything to try to be a good partner to him and a mother to his children and mine. Pero yun nga, magaling siguro siyang magdala o umarte for him to be able to manage to maintain two affairs at the same time.
"I do not want to go into the horrific details of it dahil nakakahiya sa mga anak ko. When I saw them na sila yung sobrang naapektuhan ng mga pangyayari sa mga kagagahan ko, 'tsuk,' may tumusok sa kunsensya ko. Sabi ko, 'hindi na puwede ito.' I was once an addict, nabaliw sa pag-ibig, naloko ng lalaki, ‘tapos may ganito uli.
I need to work also.
With her manager Nene Riego, she hopes to get reconnected to the industry she once loved and enjoyed.
"Pero I still want my ex-partner to know na may utang pa rin siyang dapat bayaran sa akin. I still have his bounced checks at ayaw ko nang pahabain pa ito. 300K is still 300 thousand, at kaya ko rin siya sinisingil ay dahil part yun ng ipinamanang pera sa akin ng tatay ko," ang hirit pa ni Ms. Lyka Ugarte, who takes pride in taking care of her four children na pawang mga ismarte at nag-aaral sa reputable schools.
Her eldest son is graduating this year, while her second daughter is taking up Nursing. The third, who happens to be a girl, is an incoming college sophomore, and her youngest son is in high school.
