My Childhood Best Friend/My Best Friend for Life
Teenage us – who would imagine then what has become of us now?
I was in many ways envious of what you were – pretty, intelligent, fair-skinned, and so many things else that I wish I was or had. But you were my friend – and in a way that was enough. I shone in the light that you gave off – and I was content. Even when you were in the dark places in your life – I thought it was definitely more exciting than the life I was living.
But life has a way of opening our eyes to what is real – so I went to college in UP and worked as a teacher, married and had a family – but in the course of living my life I would keep my eyes and ears open for bits and pieces of “you”. Every victory you had - I celebrated – and for every fall- I shed a tear, but most of all - each time you stood back up – I was there cheering you on.
It seemed that we had grown too far apart and that the lives we led were too different for us to ever find our friendship again - yet we did - and here we are – thirty odd years after – still friends.
I have always loved this song from the musical Wicked – and truly – because I knew you - I have been changed for good.
