The Top 50 Inventions of the Past 50 Years
1961—CORDLESS TOOLS
Black and Decker releases its first cordless drill, but designers can't coax more than 20 watts from its NiCd batteries. Instead, they strive for efficiency, modifying gear ratios and using better materials. The revolutionary result puts new power in the hands of DIYers and—thanks to a NASA contract—the gloves of astronauts.
1961—INDUSTRIAL ROBOT
The Unimate, the first programmable industrial robot, is installed on a General Motors assembly line in New Jersey. Conceived by George C. Devol Jr. to move and fetch things, the invention gets a lukewarm reception in the United States. Japanese manufacturers love it and, after licensing the design in 1968, go on to dominate the global market for industrial robots.
1962—COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE
Telstar is launched as the first "active" communications satellite—active as in amplifying and retransmitting incoming signals, rather than passively bouncing them back to Earth. Telstar makes real a 1945 concept by science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, who envisioned a global communications network based on geosynchronous satellites. Two weeks after Telstar's debut, President Kennedy holds a press conference in Washington, D.C., that is broadcast live across the Atlantic.
1962—LED
Working as a consultant for General Electric, Nick Holonyak develops the light-emitting diode (LED), which provides a simple and inexpensive way for computers to convey information. From their humble beginnings in portable calculators, LEDs spread from the red light that indicates coffee is brewing to the 290-ft.-tall Reuters billboard in Times Square.
1964—UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES
Widespread use of remotely piloted aircraft begins during the Vietnam War with deployment of 1000 AQM-34 Ryan Firebees. The first model of these 29-ft.-long planes was developed in just 90 days in 1962. AQM-34s go on to fly more than 34,000 surveillance missions. Their success leads to the eventual development of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles widely used today.
1962/VIDEO GAMES
MIT programmers write Spacewar; 43 years later 89 percent of school-age kids own video games.
1955/POLIO VACCINE
The year Jonas Salk finds a way to prevent polio, there are 28,985 global cases; by 2005, the number drops to 1200.
1957/THREE-POINT SEATBELT
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 15,000 American lives are saved in 2005 by Nils Bohlin's device.
THE COMPUTER:
The first general-purpose computer, the nearly 30-ton ENIAC (1947), contains 18,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 resistors and 10,000 capacitors. In 1959, the INTEGRATED CIRCUIT puts those innards on one tiny chip. Before the entire world is networked, there is the ARPANET—four computers linked in 1969. It introduces the concept of "packet switching," which simultaneously delivers messages as short units and reassembles them at their destination. The Apple II, Commodore Pet and Radio Shack's TRS-80 are introduced in 1977—four years before IBM, soon to become synonymous with the term "PC," unveils its PERSONAL COMPUTER. In 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee creates "hypertext markup language" (HTML) to make Web pages and the "Uniform Resource Locator" (URL) to identify where information is stored. These breakthroughs form the foundation of the WORLD WIDE WEB.
1964—MUSIC SYNTHESIZER
Robert Moog develops the first electronic synthesizer to make the leap from machine to musical instrument. Moog's device not only generates better sounds than other synthesizers, it can be controlled by a keyboard rather than by punch cards. The subsequent acceptance of electronic music is a crucial step in developing audio technology for computers, cellphones and stereos.
1966—HIGH-YIELD RICE
The International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines releases a semi-dwarf, high-yield Indica variety that, in conjunction with high-yield wheat, ushers in the Green Revolution. Indica rice thrives in tropical regions of Asia and South America, raising worldwide production more than 20 percent by 1970.
1969—SMOKE DETECTOR
Randolph Smith and Kenneth House patent a battery-powered smoke detector for home use. Later models rely on perhaps the cheapest nuclear technology you can own: a chunk of americium-241. The element's radioactive particles generate a small electric current. If smoke enters the chamber it disrupts the current, triggering an alarm.
1969—CHARGE-COUPLED DEVICE
Bell Labs' George Smith and Willard Boyle invent a charge-coupled device (CCD) that can measure light arriving at a rate of just one photon per minute. Smith and Boyle's apparatus allows extremely faint images to be recorded, which is very useful in astronomy. Today, its most noticeable impact is in digital cameras, which rely on CCD arrays containing millions of pixels.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Turning 50 for Women
Source: http://womensissues.about.com/od/startingover/a/Turning-50-Women-Turning-Fifty.htm
Before turning fifty, it's possible for a woman to look forward and believe the majority of her years still lie ahead. (After all, the average life expectancy for a woman in the US now exceeds 80 years.) But after turning fifty, nearly all of us are closer to death than birth.
That thought can be both sobering and liberating. Sobering because it reminds us there's a finite span in which to accomplish what we want, be it a lengthy bucket list or a few simple wants and desires. Liberating because when we mentally and emotionally grasp that truth, a lot of non-essential concerns drop away and the important things come to the forefront.
For women the world over, turning 50 is a major milestone. in the US, jokes about being "over the hill" put a negative spin on aging. Compare this to the Netherlands, where women who turn 50 have 'seen Sarah' and are honored with a birthday celebration that acknowledges their wisdom and experience.
Turning 50 heralds a decade of transition, many of them involving bodily changes.
Menopause ends the childbearing years. Gray hairs supplant natural color, forcing one of three decisions: let nature take its course, cover the gray or try a completely different shade. (Unlike men, women haven't embraced head shaving as midlife sexy.) Changes in vision require reading glasses. Gravity takes its toll as our necks sag, stomachs bulge, breasts droop, faces wrinkle, underarms swing like fish bellies. Waists thicken and knees and back ache. Skin loses its elasticity, causing some of us to try and turn the clocks back by means of all sorts of chemical and medical interventions -- moisturizers, ointments to reduce age spots, wrinkle creams, Botox injections, plastic surgery, face and eye lifts.
Exterior factors also push us in new directions. The empty nest that results when children leave for college or work leave may initially seem depressing. But in the long run the freedom can be exhilarating, providing an opportunity to try something new such as a career change, going back to school, or downsizing and moving to a new location.
Reaching age 50 can precipitate the infamous "midlife crisis," and divorce is often an end result. While experts cite fear as a major factor in men's lives, women are driven by the opportunity to change or improve aspects of their lives they may have been unhappy with over the years. And after years of building a career and achieving financial security, women may find themselves able to weather the economic upheaval of divorce -- something that was not possible in earlier decades.
At age 50, although a woman's physical appearance and attractiveness is still important, it is not the main focus of her life as it might have been in the preceding decades. Women in their 50s often acknowledge being more comfortable in their bodies and less critical of how they look. This self-acceptance, combined with one significant benefit of menopause -- freedom from unintended pregnancy -- often enables women to enjoy sex more in their fifties.
The rise of the cougar -- women who date significantly younger men -- proves that sexual attractiveness does not end once a woman passes a set number of years. Frequently women in their fifties find that as their obligations to children and family are lessened, they're able to focus on themselves; many report eating better and getting into better physical shape than they have been for years. With this comes a heightened sense of self-esteem, a quality that's attractive at any age.
While family concerns remain, at 50 women are better able to cultivate and enjoy friendships. While getting together with female friends may have been restricted to girls' night out during the childrearing years, women in their fifties have the time and financial resources to go on girlfriend getaways, either over a long weekend or during weeklong vacations.
Relationships with children often improve as daughters and sons advance into adulthood. Living on their own with no mother to handle cooking, cleaning and laundry, grown children have a better appreciation of their mother's hard work and efforts. As those children marry and have children of their own, they experience firsthand the sacrifices and burdens of parenting and gain understanding and gratitude for their mothers. In their fifties, many women become grandmothers for the first time and rediscover the joy of having babies, toddlers and little ones in their lives -- and the benefits of being able to hand them back to mommy or daddy when the day or the visit is done.
Turning 50 is certainly momentous, but it doesn't have to be portentous. It can be a time in which to evaluate what's important and what's not, and decide if, where and when change is needed.
Fifty isn't the end of the world, but a threshold that opens onto new horizons. Whether you view the landscape ahead of you with optimism and hope or regret and fear may determine whether you reach those milestones of 60, 70, 80, 90 and beyond. Perhaps the best news of all is this: with women outliving men in the majority of nations around the globe, the benefits of our gender finally outweigh the drawbacks.

Golden age of happiness: Turning 50 is key to 'content and comfortable' life
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
UPDATED: 01:25 GMT, 20 January 2011
The good life: George Clooney, who is turning 50 this year, is in for a treat
Don't be down if you’re 50 today – you’re entering the age of true happiness.
Researchers say many of those who have passed their half century are enjoying the time of their lives – comfortable and content with their lot.
This may be because they have the peace of mind of having paid off their mortgage, got the children off their hands or are simply enjoying spending more time with loved-ones and friends.
The ‘age of happiness’ emerged in a survey which questioned almost 1,500 people aged 50 and over.
It found four out of ten were more content with their lives than at any other period.
Many admitted they enjoyed a sense of achievement from their career and pride in having children who were settled in their chosen careers.
More time to spend with family and an active social life were also key factors.
It also emerged that almost two-thirds of those in their fifties feel more confident than ever before.
And 85 per cent said things they used to worry about when in their twenties and thirties were no longer important.
More than a third said they were no longer troubled by worries over their body shape or image.
Of those who were unhappy, more than half said they were worried about their finances or their health, and more than a third were concerned about their children’s finances.
Worries about children’s relationships and fears about the care and health of their own parents also stopped them feeling completely happy.
The study was carried out by the insurance business Engage Mutual. A spokesman for the
company said: ‘It is heartening that so many are finding that being in your fifties can be the most rewarding time of your life.
‘With increased life expectancy, being 50 is considered to be relatively young these days.
‘And if people have been able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and plan their finances, they may start to feel the benefit of their efforts in these years.
'With many 50-year-olds working, household finances can start to look a bit healthier.
‘There may be a bit of spare cash to spend on holidays and hobbies, rather than working solely to pay bills, debts and the mortgage.’
The spokesman added: ‘Being a parent comes with huge responsibilities. While you never stop worrying about your children, many parents experience a sense of relief when the children settle down, and they can start to pursue their own interests.’
According to the study, key factors for a contented old age included: Being in relatively good health; having more time to enjoy life; being in a relatively good financial position; having a relationship stronger than ever; being comfortable with your body; being happy with life achievements; having the mortgage paid off; knowing what you want from life; taking lots of holidays; pursuing hobbies and interests; becoming a grandparent, having a great social life; taking early voluntary retirement; having more friends than ever.
